The Analysis of the US Mid-Term Elections 2026 Results

We already discussed the role and relevance of the midterms in the USA. We are here to discuss in depth the US midterm election results in 2026, which are a referendum on Trump's second term.

US midterm elections comprise the race for the US Congress- House of Representatives, Senate, Gubernatorial Race, Secretary of State, etc. The Midterm Election is the second most important election in the USA after the General Election, aka the Presidential Election. The last Midterm election was in 2022, following the presidential election of 2024, which gave a resounding victory to Donald Trump. In 2025, we had mini elections in New Jersey, Virginia and New York gubernatorial and mayoral races.

Note: Counting is still going, and we will be updated as the results come in.

US Senate

Undoubtedly, Democrats have flipped several Senate seats to take control of the US Senate for the next two years. Surprisingly, Democratic Party gains have come from the Republican strongholds of Kansas, Iowa, South Carolina, and Texas, which flipped. Candidate Quality was one of the biggest parts of this election, where Democratic candidates were more moderate compared to Republicans, whose President and incumbents were very unpopular.

Texas

Most important is the Texas victory, seen as the big stronghold of the Republican Party, where the Young Democrat 4 time state congressman James Talarico, ousted unpopular incumbent Republican Ken Paxton by double digits using an unconventional campaign that hasn't had a Democrat win statewide for 30 years. This was due to a strong turnout in urban and suburban areas as well as in the border areas with Mexico. Immigration was a key issue in the state, with a high Hispanic population who helped Trump in 2024 but voted against him in 2026.

Iowa

Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek defeats GOP Rep. Ashley Hinson to wrest the seat, in a state which voted for Trump three times. This is key, as this was a Trumpland voting for Trump in 2016, 2020 and 2024 but was badly affected by Trump's tariffs and the Iran war.

Kansas

This was the biggest shocker of the season. A state which has not seen a senator for 100 years, with the last Senator in 1932, has seen the victory of Adam Hilton as the senator-elect.

Ohio

The swing state, which turned to Republicans in the past few years, can change its character. Veteran politician Sherrod Brown, who lost in 2024, made a big comeback in 2026 through extensive turnout in urban and suburban areas. He defeated Jon Husted of the Republican Party.

South Carolina

Annie Andrews is projected to become the first elected female US senator from South Carolina, defeating appointed Sen. Darline Graham, the sister of Late Senator Lindsey Graham and flipping the seat that Republicans have held for nearly three decades.

The most looked after election was the one in Maine- A seat held by Susan Collins, Maine's longest-serving member of Congress and the longest-serving Republican woman in the Senate. Maine traditionally is a Democratic leaning state, but Susan Collins wins through a moderate image. Maine is also a state with a lot more centrist and moderate voters. Troy Jackson defeated her in this wave election.

Michigan

Abdul El Sayed will be the next Senator from Michigan, holding on to the seat for Democrats in a very narrowly contested race. He defeated Mike Rogers in a very interesting race.

Georgia

Incumbent Jon Ossoff won the state of Georgia by more than 15%, a state which was a Republican stronghold just six years ago and is currently having a Republican Governor. He won by increasing the turnout in the Atlanta Metro area and some rural counties. He is doing excellent among the Black voters of the state. He was one of the best Democratic Senators in the current Senate.

Governors Race

Democrats are projected to win governors' races in Deep Republican strongholds of Texas, Kansas, Ohio, Georgia & Iowa. In Kansas, it was a hold, while in other states it was different. Along with the Senate, Texas, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa and Alaska are witnessing a strong pick-up for the governor's race as well.

Amy Acton has defeated Vivek Ramaswamy in a surprise, with strong turnout in the urban centres. Katie Hobbs has won the race for Nevada as governor. Josh Shapiro held his governorship in Pennsylvania by a 20% margin. Kathy Hochul is re-elected governor of New York. So was Wes Moore of Maryland. One big relief for Republicans was the victory of Byron Donalds in Florida, along with retaining their Senate seat of Marco Rubio.

Also, the Democrats hold the most governorships in the country for the first time since 2010.

Ballot Measures

Missouri Ballot Measure opposed the redistricting of the state, which was done in favour of Republicans.

Big Victory for People of Colour and Minorities

Indian origin Pia Dandiya became the second Indian Origin woman in the US Congress. Melat Kiros will become the first female Black member of Congress from Colorado. Claire Valdez will become the first female Native American member of Congress from New York. Given that Democrats won the House of Representatives, it is likely that Hakeem Jeffries will be the first African American (Black) Speaker of the House.

Chris Pappas is projected to become the first openly gay male senator in US history with his win in New Hampshire’s US Senate race. Abdul El Sayed will be the first Muslim senator in the USA. Annie Andrews will become the first elected female US senator from South Carolina.

Kelsha Lance Bottoms will be Georgia's first Black Woman Governor and also the first Woman Governor of Florida. She will be the first Black woman governor in any state in the US. Amy Acton is projected to become the first woman ever elected as Ohio Governor. Gina Hinojosa will be the first Latina Governor. Byron Donalds of the Republican Party will be the first Black Governor of Florida. David Crowley will be the first Black Governor of Wisconsin. Xavier Becerra is projected to become the first elected Latino governor of California.

Key Takeaways from the Elections

This election night was a gigantic blue tsunami and disaster for the Republicans. A few months back, when Republicans were hopeful of retaining the Senate, they lost everything. The main question remains: Why are Democrats winning in the elections recently?

Everything began in the state of Iowa, a Trumpland, with farmers voting for Trump in 2016, 2020 and 2024 due to subsidies. In April, it was hit hard by the consequences of the war with Iran. High gas and diesel prices (with diesel exceeding $5–$6 a gallon) have driven up shipping and production expenses for Iowa farmers. Fertiliser costs have jumped by more than 30%, along with the new expenses for corn and soybean farmers who are also dealing with trade tariffs. Let's not forget that China, due to the tariff war, stopped buying American soybeans and corn and instead went to buy from Brazil. You can see that the Democrats won the Senate the moment Iowa was called in. Iowa also got a Democratic senator. Immigration was the key issue in the Southern US along the border with Mexico while the Tariffs remained a big issue for the Industrial Rust Belt States of the North along the border with Canada.

Every election is about two factors: turnout and the issues. In the 2024 elections, Trump and Republicans won in a high-turnout race. He won among the low-propensity voters. They are a bunch of apolitical voters who support one side extensively and then disappear. In 2024, they were key to Trump's victory and even Republicans getting a majority in Congress. They have now fully disappeared or have changed their vote.

Currently, you can see highly enthusiastic voters are now turning out to vote, and they are Democrats, Youth, neutral voters and some moderates. Also, given how unpopular Trump is amongst independent and some moderate GOP voters, the turnout has become against Trump and his party. This has led to election outcomes in favour of Democrats. Given that these are also off-year races, Democrats have become more enthusiastic in coming out to vote.

The tactics of Republicans, including voter suppression, billionaires pouring money, mid-decade redistricting, and gerrymandering, did not work well with the people. His candidates lost; his rallies went to waste. $450 M that Elon Musk poured, especially in keeping the Senate red, went to waste. Democrats were able to flip the Texas House as well.

This election undoubtedly has been a referendum on Trump's second term, which has been a disaster. This is the time for him to change the course of his presidency, or else he and the party will suffer even more in the upcoming elections. This election will also strengthen the debate within the Democratic Party, whether they will swing far left or move further towards the centre, as well as open discussions on the 2028 Presidential race front-runners.

What Next?

Without the control of both chambers of Congress, the next two years of Trump's presidency are a Lame Duck Presidency. Republicans and Democrats will have to work together for a better future.

The key lesson for the Democrats is that, if they work together as a big tent party, a single bloc leaving aside their differences, they can win. Also, enthusiasm and turnout remain key for every Democratic victory.

As the Democratic Governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro said- What guarantees victory for you is delivery, ie., fully fulfilling your promises.
