He will be the first Muslim, Indian-origin, South Asian, and the second-youngest mayor of the city. The victory of Zohran Mamdani in NYC had raised questions on the future of the Democratic Party. This podcast episode will dive into how and why Zohran Mamdani won in the New York City Mayoral Election, and what the future of the democratic party will be, and what is the status of Left-Wing Populism in the USA is.

Guest Milan C Varghese was hosted by Jairam R Prabhu and gave his unique perspectives on the topic of the day- Zohran Mamdani's victory and the rise of Left Wing Populism in the  US. After his personal introduction and opening remarks, Milan elaborated on the extraordinary victory of Mamdani. Thereafter, he talked about what special did Mamdani do to win the hearts and minds of people of the city, notably the South Asians, the working class, and a section of the Jews as well.

How and Why did Zohran Mamdani win?

On 1st July, the results of the New York City Mayoral Democratic Party Primary were out. Whoever wins the democratic primary is likely to be the mayor of NYC. Zohran Mamdani has won the Democratic Party Primary. The City follows a ranked choice system where votes are transferred to a higher candidate until someone achieves at least 50% of the vote. Mamdani was leading in the first round before the transfer of votes. He defeated the long-time veteran of New York Politics, Andrew Cuomo, 56-44 in the second round.
