We all associate ourselves with various identities such as Indians, Chinese, Pakistani, Americans, Canadians, French, British and much more. Why do you think we all associate with all these more? Are there any other identities which people associate with?  The identities which I mentioned before are relatively new compared to other identities such as religion, language, caste, and various other identities. It is not to say that people never had such feelings towards nations or the state. But the idea of loyalty and love for the motherland was very important which offset various other identities. The question we are arriving at is what is the motherland, who made and how it formed.  What we refer to today as a Nation or Country refers to what we know in political science as a Nation-State. Europe is one of the most interesting continents to learn about and also has a strong regional identity. Europe in Political Science and International Relations cannot be talked about without the term- European Politics which stems from the idea of the European Union (EU). Having been established in 1992, the EU is a very powerful organisation with extraordinary powers and comprising its own unique politics. Even though the EU started as an institution for strong economic and political collaboration, today it is challenged by multiple issues of social and political implications. For the past ten years, the topics, of Immigration, Far-right parties and rising Islamophobia. Today, through this podcast episode will dive through all these topics directly from the expert on all these topics.

Basile Moyaerts obtained his master’s in history in 2022 at KU Leuven, Belgium and continues his studies in international politics at the same university. Besides his education, he is also active in Belgian politics. He is a board member of the youth party of CD&V, the Christian Democratic Party of Flanders, and has experience at the local, state, national and European level. You can follow him on Social Media.

Summary of the podcast 

Generally, these topics aren’t much available in the mainstream media, because they are believed hard to crack and don't address the basics. But, through our podcast, we disprove this misconception that these cannot be understood by common people. We explain in simple terms various subtopics under this vast topic in the form of conversational and discussion styles. Everything is easy to follow and understandable in the episode. 

Moderator Jairam introduced the topic of the day followed by the Guest Basille's self-introduction and elaborating more about his country Belgium which is lesser known to many. Apart from waffles and chocolates, the debate went in depth about Belgium's geography, history, languages, politics and its role in European politics. The next of the list discussed was the political spectrum and history of parties in Europe. The main highlight was the rise of far-right parties in the early 21st century. 

The discussion went on to the politics in Europe, ranging from immigration, anti-immigration sentiments, Islamophobia, and the rise in populism across the continent. In continuation, the panellist talked elaborately about Brexit and the polarisation of the Russia-Ukraine war. The most highlighted aspect talked about was the Hungarian stance under Victor Orban. Lastly, the podcast ended with a discussion on the future of EU and European politics. Also, the sources that would be helpful for the audience reference were also discussed.
