#opinion Kerala is a state that is often considered one of the best places to live in India. It ranks high on multiple indices of the NITI Aayog and boasts impressive Human Development Indicators such as literacy rate, healthcare, education, and low corruption. This success is attributed to the contributions of visionary leaders, irrespective of political affiliation, as well as public participation in socio-politics, policymakers, subject experts, the erstwhile Travancore Kingdom, and many others. This collective effort has led to what is known as the Kerala Model of Development. The state is among the top ten in terms of both GDP and per capita income. Despite Kerala's significant progress in quality of life and human development parameters, there are other fronts where this success is lacking. Special Anniversaries and Celebrations of 2022

2022 has been a surprising year for everyone. Entering the third year of the pandemic, the situation has become normal for many while for others it has worsened or remained the same. Whether we like it or not, 2022 has had an impact on us. It will continue to have an impact, as we still have nine months to go.


In the past, I had written an article on various political events which will take place in 2022 and their impact on international politics at large. 2022 has been declared the International Year of Glass by the United Nations. Why glass? It is a significant invention that is in use in multiple domains, especially in the industry and also as the world gets access to the internet through undersea optic fibre cables. The General Assembly has also declared this year the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries Fisheries and Aquaculture. 2022 has the hundredth anniversary of Egyptian Independence and also the fifty-fifth anniversary of the invention of the ATM- Automatic Teller Machine.

We hereby look at various anniversaries of this year what has happened till now and what will happen in the coming days.

January

3rd- It has been 65 years since the electric watch was unveiled on the market by Hamilton Watch. It was a revolution in the industry as battery-powered quartz watches were introduced for the first time.

4th- is Celebrated as World Braille Day as it is the 170th birth Anniversary of Louis Braille.

7th- is commemorated as Hawking Day celebrating the Birth Anniversary of Respected British Scientist, Dr Stephen Hawking. His contributions to Black holes, Radiation, Space-Time etc. He had a motor neuron disease for fifty years that lead to his death in March 2018. He is a renowned Physicist.

10th- 95th anniversary of the Science-Fiction film Metropolis. It is considered to be one of the most influential films ever made. It is also on the list of the World Register. Same-day, we also have the 60th anniversary of the Indian Space Research Agency INCOSPAR. It was established in 1962. In 1969 it was later renamed ISRO. ISRO today is one of the leading Space agencies in the world.

11th- 10oth anniversary of the production of Insulin in the world. Thus, successful treatment of diabetes was possible on a large level.

17th- 80th birth anniversary of famous boxer Muhammed Ali.

23rd- 125th Anniversary of Legendary Indian Freedom Fighter Subhash Chandra Bose. He was the founder of the Indian National army and tried to ally with the Japanese to fight the British in India.

27th- 190 years of "Alice in Wonderland".

February

2nd- 140th anniversary of Fiction author James Joyce. He is known for his masterpiece- Ulysses.

3rd- 50 years after the first Winter Olympics that was held outside North America or Europe. It was held in Sapporo, Japan. The same city was made the host in 1937 but couldn't host after the Japanese invasion of China.

6th- Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II's crowning of the monarch of the UK.

17th- Suez Canal Day, 155 years after the Suez Canal was constructed and opened. It took ten years to construct the canal. This saved time for travel from Europe to Asia. It is 193 km long and is located between two big ports, Port Said and Port Suez.

23rd- 24 years since the first cloned animal came to life. Dolly the sheep was the first animal to be cloned and brought to life.

26th- 220th Birth Anniversary of Victor Hugo. Despite being a lawyer by profession, he was a poet and a writer.

28th- Hundredth Anniversary of Egyptian Independence. For a long period of time, Egypt always had foreign involvement mostly coming from the superpowers. This is because of its strategic location and being the home of several civilisations starting from BCs.

March

1st- 150th anniversary of the establishment of the first National Park- The Yellow Stone National Park. It covers an area of more than 8000 sq km covering three states in the US- Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. The Park also has a lot of volcanos as its located on the tectonic plate edge.

3rd- 175th birth anniversary of Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone.

17th- Abolition of the policy of Apartheid in South Africa. It was a policy of racial segregation in South Africa followed for decades ever since its colonisation. It took four decades of struggle to get Apartheid abolished in the country. Nelson Mandela is a renowned leader who has been part of the struggle.

24th- 140th Death anniversary of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Who is he? He is a long time Children's poet known for his sweet poems written for the children.

26th- 195th death anniversary of legendary German Musician and Pianist Beethoven.

April

6th- Isaac Asimov is a world-famous Science fiction writer. This year is his 30th death anniversary and for accepting his contributions to the scientific community.

12th- 61 years since the first man was shot to space. Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin used Spacecraft Vostok-1 to circle around the Earth in space.

13th- World Famous Golfer Tiger Woods, at the age of 20, won his first Master's tile on this day, 25 years back.

15th- The legendary President of America, Abraham Lincoln when known for his leadership through the American Civil War, the abolition of Slavery in the country and the triumph of the Union over the Confederate states breathed his last day in 1865. On the same day a century back, the luxury ship Titanic sunk in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean after hitting on an iceberg.

20th- 200th Birth anniversary of Scientist Louis Pasteur who made sure that milk is safe for human consumption through a process called Pasteurisation (named after him). This was also used to preserve milk and beer for a longer period of time. He is also known for his Germ theory.

23rd- Birth anniversary of William Shakespeare. It is also the 30th death anniversary of Satyajit Ray, the father of the Indian Film Industry. He was awarded Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

26th- The deadly nuclear accident that took place in Chernobyl, Ukraine (then USSR), happened on this day in 1986. It is considered to be the worst nuclear accident in the world till now.

May

1st- The Birth of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The Union acts were passed in both England and Scotland parliaments in 1706 and 1707 respectively. Thus the merger happened.

7th- The surrender of Germany in WW2 happened on this day in the hands of allied forces in 1945. Chancellor Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April 30, just seven days before its surrender. Despite this, WW2 continued due to the involvement of Japan.

8th- The term vaccine got massive traction with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the concept of vaccines wasn't novel at all and has been used for a very long time in fighting deadly diseases. On this day in 1980, the World was declared Small Pox free. This was possible only because of Small Pox vaccines that were invented by Edward Jenner for Small Pox in 1796. It took more than 200 years after the invention for it to get it eradicated.

22nd- 250th Birth anniversary of India's great Social Reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy. He tried to reform religions in India, especially in the abolition of Sati, child marriage, polygamy, encouraging women's education, and remarriage.

29th- The world saw Man reach the peak of the World's highest mountain, Mt Everest. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay achieved this rare feat back in May 1953.

June 3

3rd- 50th Anniversary of Pioneer 10 space mission that was sent to study Asteroid Belt and Jupiter. It continued to be operated for 31 years until it lost its signal.

14th- World's First Mechanical Computer "Difference Engine" was proposed by Charles Babbage and was adopted by the Royal Astronomical Society of London. It is a mechanical computer which means it uses mechanical operations to perform compters. It used polynomials for its calculations.

16th- 111th anniversary of International Business Machines (IBM), a company that uses technology for business operations. It was first based on punch cards. It was nicknamed Big Blue.

23rd- Birth of Forensics and its applications in Criminal Law. Trace the criminal using scientific evidence. William Bayle was the first person to be investigated and convicted using this method.

27th- World's First Nuclear Power plant started its operation in Obninsk, USSR. It was operational from 1954 till 2002 without any issues.

28th- World War 1 started with the Austria-Hungary empire invading Serbia on this day in 1914. The triple entente alliance came to the rescue of Serbia and later the central powers supported Austria and attacked the allies.

July

1st- The territory of Hong Kong was transferred back to China twenty-five years ago by the United Kingdom. It was taken for lease for 99 years from 1898 to 1997. Day, Sony unveiled its Walkman in the year 1979.

4th- Independence of the United States of America which successfully drove out the colonisers British in 1776. On the same day in 1898, the US gave independence to its colony Philipines which it had taken after defeating Spain in the Spanish-American war.

11th- 49 years since SkyLab was sent to space by the US.

20th- An important day in the history of mankind, when three astronauts set their foot on the moon. They were Neil Amstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins. The apollo-11 mission carried them to space in 1969.

25th- A hovercraft (a vehicle that floats on water by creating an air cushion) crossed the English Channel in two hours.

August

6th- One of the days that shook humanity at large. An atom developed by the United States was used in the City of Hiroshima as an effort to end WW2. It was commanded by US President Harry S Truman.

9th- Similar to the 6th, after the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, a similar bomb was dropped on the port city of Nagasaki. This bomb was effective in forcing the Japanese to surrender and thus bringing an end to WW2.

15th- India will celebrate its platinum Independence day from Great Britain this year. This day is also the anniversary of the Japanese surrender of the port of Singapore and the day of Korean Independence.

September

4th- Being one of the most visited websites in the world as well as one of the biggest search engines in the world, Google Day is celebrated. This year is the 24th Google day.

11th- Saddest day in the US history post WW2, the day of the 9/11 terror attack which targeted the World Trade Center and Pentagon through the hijacking of civilian planes.

October

2nd- Also celebrated as World Non-Violence Day is the birth anniversary of India's Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. He mobilised the nation for freedom struggle whereas he was even popular to have used only non-violent methods and civil disobedience.

31st- Death Anniversary of India's Iron lady and the country's first Woman Prime Minister- Mrs Indira Gandhi.

November

5th- In 2013 on this day, India launched the world's cheapest Mars Orbiter Mission in the world. It was named Mangalyaan which is also called The Pride of Asia.

24th- On this day in 1859, Charles Darwin's Origin of the Species Book was published. The book was based on evolution, natural selection and survival. It is a very important book in the Scientific world.

December

3rd- 55 years since the world's first human heart transplant. Christain Barnard, A South African surgeon was the first to perform this surgery.
