Emigration Is (Not) Bad: Rethinking the Debate

Image
The Ministry of External Affairs, in a question to the Rajya Sabha, gave a response that over 2 lakh Indians gave up their citizenship in 2024. Since 2022, every year, this is the figure of number of Indians giving up Indian citizenship. The past two to three years in India have seen extensive talk about the number of people moving out and relinquishing their citizenship. People also give a very catchy term for that- "Brain Drain", where intelligent and well-qualified citizens are leaving the country for opportunities elsewhere. Then there is the argument of demographic change, where regions are seeing young people leave for green pastures and old people remain with no one to take care of them. All of them are true and valid points, but there is another side of the debate which we often ignore and miss.  The causes of migration can be broadly categorised as push and pull factors. Obsessions of a Firewright - A Book of Poems For You

Prayer to a Flame

O flame,
I offer my mind unto thee
Cleanse me of my misdeeds
My godforsaken memories
Burn away those thoughts
You may deem unworthy
Alight a new path for me
One not filled with temptation
Nor anger nor jealousy
Burn in my forehead
Whenever I close my eyes
Burn between my eyebrows
As the watchful one
Who chains my mind from fluttering
Into the sea of distraction and disharmony

O flame,
I offer my soul unto thee...

This book is a collection of poems, that are based on my core beliefs, expectations for the future, and on events in my past. Some of them are poems from my journals. Others, are stanzas, that I wrote on scraps of paper while travelling when I didn't have my journal at hand. Most of these are simply experiences shaped into stories. These poems, don't just reflect who I am as an individual. They represent the values and ideals that have shaped me so far, which have given me a sense of direction in life. If you should glean something after reading this, it's that every individual has a story and that every story has it's own significance. The culmination of different stories is what makes life, worth living. This is simply, a small part of my story so far.
